El Monte's Sales Tax > Beverly Hills' Sales Tax!?

So... we all knew the California's sales tax was gonna go up, right? BUT did any of you guys know that El Monte's sales tax is actually higher than Arcadia's?? It's even higher than Beverly Hills' or Bel Air's! WTH! We all know that El Monte is pretty ghetto and has been trying to lure businesses to come, but with higher taxes and all, it really makes me wonder how the city council is going to manage to do that. Honestly, I already do a lot of my shopping in other cities. Sorry to say, this just motivates me to do it more.

Check it out for yourselves: http://www.boe.ca.gov/cgi-bin/rates.cgi?LETTER=E&LIST=CITY

  1. Man, we should write a strongly worded letter to city hall or show up at the city council meeting and stir up a ruckus. Some university educated students oughta fix their wagon.

  2. A reason could be that El Monte needs more revenue to fix up its problems than Arcadia or Beverly Hills do. Then again, El Monte was never famous for good municipal spending. Another one could be to compensate for the tax revenue lost due lack of good shopping areas compared to other cities. This is a terrible strategy. In business, when sales are low, you don't compensate for profit lost to sales numbers by increasing prices. That's stupid. Also, if the previous sales tax in El Monte (8.25%) already met the new state minimum in the first place, why the hell are they increasing it and increasing it by so much?

  3. All we've got is speculation until we see what all this tax revenue will be going to. If El Mo's spending this on something important for city infrastructure or something, I certainly don't mind as much - that's an investment for the future. But if it's for something stupid like more cops or compensating for lost business then screw that.

I sure wouldn't mind drafting an A-men Declaration if you guys are willing to sign off on it.
